Investigation Summary

At 2:00 p.m. on September 4, 2024, Employee #1, employed by a landscaping and irrigation company, was performing semiweekly maintenance on a landscaping irrigation system at a residential neighborhood managed by Country Run HOA in Hercules, CA. Employee #1 had been working for approximately five hours when the incident occurred. After not being seen for several hours, a coworker went looking for him and found Employee #1 unconscious and unresponsive on the floor near the sink in the men's restroom at the neighborhood's swimming pool. Emergency services were called, and EMS personnel attempted to resuscitate Employee #1 but were unsuccessful. Employee #1 was declared dead at the scene, and the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office was notified. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was due to acute coronary arteriosclerosis. CalOSHA investigated the incident and identified the fatality as the result of natural causes, specifically an acute medical condition.
