Investigation Summary
At 11:30 a.m. on November 7, 2019, an employee working as a construction laborer for a water and sewer pipeline contractor was operating a SkilSaw Model SPT77W worm drive circular saw. The employee was using the saw to cut wedges from a 2-inch by 4-inch board. The employee had worked for the employer for approximately 8 years at the time. The employee is the foreman for the crew that included himself and five coworkers, three of which were laborers and two who were superintendents directing work at the site. The employee was kneeling while holding the board with one hand and the saw with his other hand. He was cutting his third wedge when the saw kicked back and struck his left hand. The employee stated that the board was approximately 1.5 feet long at the time and that he was using a couple pieces of the lumber to lean the work piece on while cutting the wedges. The employee had not secured the wood to a stable platform. The employee sustained fractures, contusions and lacerations to his hand and fingers and was hospitalized.
