OSHA is asking a series of questions designed to explore the scope and current relevancy of the grain handling facilities rulemaking record, closed in 1985, on matters such as dust-containment methods and costs. Based on the comments received, OSHA will determine whether the existing record is sufficiently complete and current to support a conclusion on alternatives to applying the 1/8 inch action level housekeeping provision only to priority areas, including the alternative of expanding the action level to the entire grain elevator facility.

Three references to OSHA''s general industry welding, cutting and brazing standards that are found in other OSHA general industry standards are being amended. These technical amendments are necessary to conform to the April 11, 1990, "Redesignation and other non- substantive revisions" made to the welding, cutting and brazing standards. The references will now reflect the new welding, cutting and brazing rule designations and will not alter the general industry provisions'' requirements.

This notice schedules an informal public hearing concerning the
proposed standard for grain handling facilities, 29 CFR 1910.272 (49
FR 996, January 6, 1984). This notice also announces the
availability of an economic analysis of the proposal, and extends
the comment period on that analysis and on several issues discussed
in this notice. At the request of numerous commenters, the period
for receiving written comments was subsequently extended until June
8, 1984.

of fires, grain dust explosions and other safety hazards associated
with grain handling facilities. Employees in grain handling

and tanks.

On December 31, 1987, OSHA published a final standard on grain
handling facilities (52:49592-631). This rule was transmitted to the
Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review and clearance of
the information collection requirements contained therein, in
accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1980, 44 U.S.C. 3501
et seq. and 5 CFR Part 1320. The information requirements contained
in the final rule in paragraphs (d) and (i) of 1910.272 have
received OMB paperwork clearance, and have been assigned OMB Control
Number 1218-0144.
