Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazard due to failure of the flat car frame due to coil weight and the existing cracks in the car frame(s): a) Sheet and Tin Division 1) Anneal Area - Batch anneal transfer car #5, cracks in both sides of the car frame, observed August 8, 1989. 2) Anneal Area - Batch anneal transfer car #4, cracks in both sides of the car frame, observed August 8, 1989. 3) Anneal Area - Batch anneal transfer car #24, cracks in both sides of the car frame, observed August 1, 1989. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to properly repair the cracks or replace the cars.
