Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 004 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.138(a): General requirements. Employers shall select and require employees to use appropriate hand protection when employees' hands are exposed to hazards such as those from skin absorption of harmful substances; severe cuts or lacerations; severe abrasions; punctures; chemical burns; thermal burns; and harmful temperature extremes. On or about December 14, 2018, an employee was exposed to fire hazards that resulted in second degree burns to the back and other body parts. The employee was performing a washing process that required transferring toluene from an unbonded and ungrounded 55 gallon drum via a hand pump. The employer did not require the use of hand protection to protect against burns to the hands. There is no abatement certification or documentation required for this item.
