Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Falling from a hot air balloon while being attached to a bungee cord that wasn't rigged correctly. An employee testing the bungee jump equipment left the balloon, that was approximately 190 feet above ground level, at 6300 Tennyson Street, Arvada, Colorado. One of the bungee lines was not attached correctly and was rigged to handle the weight of the employee. The employee struck the ground at a high rate of speed. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO FOLLOW "NORTH AMERICAN BUNGEE ASSOCIATION GUIDELINES" CONCERNING THE INSPECTION AND RIGGING BEFORE JUMPS ARE PERMITTED.
