Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish emoloyment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to death or major fracture hazards while working on structures that were corroded, deteriorated and missing structural member that were in danger of collapse: a) Iron and Transportation Division 1) Blast Furnace Department - Coke Breeze loading-out station - The entire structure had severe structural damage including; damaged base structures, cross-bracing angles missing and steel members corroded, observed August 8, 1989. 2) Blast Furnace Department - Junction House for #9 and #10 conveyor, the entire structure had angles missing and steel members severely corroded, observed August 8, 1989. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to correct all structural deficiencies as noted in the in-house structural survey conducted by Orbital Engineering.
