Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling from elevation: a) Rail Yard, On or about 10/21/11 and at times prior there to employee(s) were exposed to trip and struck by hazards when working with low visibility of 0.1 footcandles at night while repositioning railcars. AMONG OTHER METHODS, FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHODS TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD ARE TO: INSTALL LIGHTING THAT WOULD INCREASE THE ILLUMINATION TO A MINIMUM OF 10 LUX/1 FOOTCANDLES THROUGHOUT. REFERENCE: AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD FOR INDUSTRIAL LIGHTING ANSI/IES-RP-7-01 ANNEX A-2 CURRENTLY RECOMMENDED ILLUMINANCE FOR INDUSTRIAL OUTDOOR SPACES. IN ADDITION, AN ALTERNATIVE COULD BE TO PROVIDE EMPLOYEE(S) WITH A FLASH LIGHT THAT IS MOUNTED ON THEIR HARD HATS SUCH THAT THE FLASH LIGHT IS ON THE EMPLOYEE AT ALL TIMES.
