Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards: At Rig #559 north of Cleveland, Arkansas, an employee working from the derrick board was allowed to work approximately 48 feet above the rig floor without fall protection on or about August 13, 2005. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1) Comply with the American Petroleum Institute (API) Recommended Practice 54, 1999, paragraph 5.5.1, that all personnel engaged in work ten feet above the rig floor or other working surfaces shall be protected at all time from falling by guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems. 2) Communicate and enforce company safety practice for working on elevated surfaces requiring any person working 6 feet or more above a work surface be protected from falling by a full body harness with a shock absorbing lanyard attached to a stationary support.ry
