Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing, or likely to cause, death or serious physical harm in that employees around the crane during rigging up procedures were exposed to a struck by hazard from the moving crane. On or about 5/6/06, an employee was struck by a Link-Belt crawler crane while it was positioning for a lift. Employees were working on setting up Unit Drilling rig #151 at Cardwell #1H near Brock,TX. No signalman was used to spot the crane when it was traveling. Among other methods, some feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are: Instruct the crane operator to follow the instructions outlined in the safety manual for the crane and to use a signalman at all times when moving the crane. Instruct the truck pusher supervisors to enforce the safety procedures for backing up a crane and hold them accountable. Another employee needs to be designated as a signalman when the employee assigned is given another task. Instruct all riggers and other employees on site to be aware of their surroundings and follow the safety procedures for moving all machines and vehicles.
