Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.106(g)(8): "Sources of ignition." In addition to the previous restrictions of this paragraph, the following shall apply: There shall be no smoking or open flames in the areas used for fueling, servicing fuel systems for internal combustion engines, receiving or dispensing of flammable liquids. Conspicuous and legible signs prohibiting smoking shall be posted within sight of the customer being served. The motors of all equipment being fueled shall be shut off during the fueling operation. a. On or July 26, 2019, at the above addressed jobsite, employees was required to repair electrical wires in a sump pit which was, used for servicing fuel systems for gasoline pumps. The employee was attempting to remove a metal plug/bolt by sawing it with a battery operated (sawzall) reciprocating saw with flammable vapers present. The employer did not ensure that power tool used were intrinsically safe or approved for a Class I hazardous location, thereby exposing the employee to hazards associated with fire.
