Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
Section (5)(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employee(s) were exposed to burns from 200+ degree water from steam condensation. Employer is failing to protect employees during servicing or maintenance activity from all forms of hazardous energy in the following instance: On or about May 9, 2018, an employee attempted to remove the bottom end of a steam condensation drain hose on a corn flaker to check for plugging. The top of the hose came off, spilling hot water over his upper torso, causing severe burns. AMONG OTHER METHODS, FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHODS TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS ARE: i) Follow the guidelines of ANSI/ASSE Z244.1-2016 Control of Hazardous Energy: Lockout, Tagout, and Alternative Methods and implement specific energy control procedures that isolate or eliminate all forms of hazardous energy including thermal energy/hot water or steam. ii) Train employees on the machine specific energy control procedures and have an authorized employee periodically review the procedures.
