Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: having elevated loads of steel and/or concrete beams fall on them as they were allowed to take up positions under loads. (a)Gulf Coast Pre-Stress, Inc., North Market Street, Pass Christian, MS - On or about Tuesday, July 30, 1996, while the Mi-Jack Travelift Model 750, Series D Crane #4 traveled between the Pouring Bed(s) Area and the Southeast Product Storage Yard, elevated 22.4 Ton suspended load(s) of concrete bridge beams were passed over the head(s) of ground employee(s). Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to abate this hazard would be to prohibit the crane operator from carrying loads over employees.
