Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of severe multiple fractures, blunt impact, crushing injuries, concussion, even death, while performing repair or maintenance work in the truck repair and service shop area on the garage premises. The aforementioned hazards were created by releasing approximately 70 p.s.i. of compressed air into an unsecured, unrestricted air spring used as a truck jack to raise the front end of a truck/tractor that was to be repaired: The hazards can be abated by, but not limited to, programs including the following criteria: 1.Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard(s) is the use of heavy hydraulic truck jacks, that reach greater loading height than short "bottle" jacks. 2.The placement of truck jack stands underneath, once the tractor is raised sufficiently high for the repair work to be safely performed. 3.Make mandatory job safety practices that no employee be under a truck/tractor while it is being raised and supported; and that air springs not be used for purposes not intended by the manufacturer. 4.Document and enforce the implemented procedures.
