Abstract: At approximately 1:00 p.m. on February 7, 1999, Employee #1, a ski patrol member at the Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe, CA, was working with an avalanche control team. The team had thrown some explosive charges and were skiing away across an open area when an avalanche occurred. Employee #1 became caught in the rushing snow and was carried between 800 and 1,000 ft downhill, landing in a tree. He was immediately attended to by other members of the team, put on a sled, and taken to the hospital. He sustained a fractured right femur and torn ligaments in both knees.
