Abstract: At 2:15 p.m. on May 10, 2021, an employee working as a laborer for a lumber company was trying to manually pull on the flat side or end of a piggyback or mono truss. The employee was assisting a coworker to try to manually move the approximately 10-foot by 24-foot 230-pound truss, which was partially on the exit roller conveyor located outside of the building. The flat side or end of the truss had dipped under two rollers and was on the ground. The employee positioned himself between the end of the truss and a roller lifting the end of the truss up as he started pulling on it. Within a few seconds, the coworker pressed the reverse button on the finish roller press to pull the truss back toward the building since the tail end of the truss was still in the press. The coworker was inside the building and did not have a line of sight with the outside conveyor when he pressed the reverse button. The employee's upper legs were momentarily caught between the end of the truss and the roller. When he let go of the end, it dipped then struck his lower legs causing him to fall forward onto the ground. The employee was then dragged by the truss on the ground for an estimated 2 to 3 feet before the truss movement was stopped. The employee was hospitalized to treat fractured tibias and fibulas in both legs.
