Abstract: At 10:15 a.m. on January 3, 2020, an employee was working for a firm that produced hardwood lumber and flooring products. He was operating a Newman Machine planer, with serial number 15548, in the rear corner of the woodworking area at the firm's facility. A board had become jammed in the planer, and the employee needed to remove the board. The employee reached his hand into the planer. His hand came into contact with the planer head. Several of the employee's fingers were amputated. The employee was hospitalized. The guard for the Newman planer was ineffective. It was hinged and slid open with minimal effort on the part of the operator. When a piece of wood became stuck in the planer, employees were to press the emergency stop, raise the cutter head and press the board out with a 36-inch (0.9-meter) stick. Employees operating the planer were exposed to amputation hazards.
